Business
Applications
Our software and services have been applied in a variety
of different settings and more uses are being discovered
by our customers every day. Outlined below are some of the
standard modules available within our SMS technology.
Patient &
Volunteer Recruitment
Finding good quality volunteers and patients for your clinical
trials is a continuing challenge. SMS can help target, identify
and locate your volunteer or patient population. To date,
our recruitment services have been used by Phase 1 Clinics,
Patient Recruitment Agencies & Pharmaceutical Companies.
- Combining SMS with traditional marketing
mediums such as Radio and Newsprint, Exco InTouch can
provide tailored information for new & existing patients
and volunteers.
- SMS provides a new channel to target
patients and deliver timed reminders regarding screening
appointments, and trial prerequisites such as abstaining
from alcohol or returning a sample.
- Good quality people are hard to find!
So make it easier by sending messages to aid retention
and “VRM” – volunteer relationship management.

Patient Compliance
& Retention Initiatives
The statistics are concerning. Patient non-compliance can
run as high as 80% and up to 40% of patients are lost to
follow up in a clinical trial. Failing to retain these patients
can have massive impacts on cost, timelines and data quality.
Listed below are some of the solutions that have already
proven to be effective.
- Visit Reminders.
Enrolled patients receive timed reminders regarding their
next clinic appointment. This can be either one way reminders
or two way, prompting the patient to confirm that they
can or cannot attend the appointment.
- Medication Reminders.
Everyone forgets to take their medication from time to
time. This problem is further compounded when patients
are taking multiple medications (poly-pharmacy) or have
a complicated, varying regimen. SMS messages can be sent
according to medication, dose and frequency to remind
patients when and how to take their medication safely.
- Study Compliance pointers.
Simply by forgetting to fast or to take a sample of urine
can result in a patient being ineligible for the study.
Our timed reminders can help reduce these to a minimum.

Electronic Patient
Reported Outcomes (ePRO) and Mobile Data Capture
Although electronic diaries are an excellent method of collecting
ePRO (Electronic Patient Reported Outcome) data, there are
some challenges. Apart from being expensive to deploy in
many studies, there is a significant overhead in support
and additional burden to the sites.
With Exco InTouch’s data capture solution, this is
not the case. Typically using the mobile phone of the patient,
unique messages are sent to the patient’s mobile phone
asking for their response. Any reply they enter must be
preceded with their unique PIN code which links the patient
to the response.
Each message can be delivered according to the time specified
in the protocol and patients can have the ability, if appropriate,
to delay in responding so it fits into their daily routine.
All data collected is available in real time for the appropriate
stakeholders to view and read via our secure website. Role
based access ensures that the appropriate people have access
the correct data at the right time.

Clinical Trial
Communication Network
Although there have been huge steps forward in conducting
clinical trials with such advancements as Electronic Data
Capture, IVRS etc; the simple things continue to challenge
us! Providing a simple and effective method of communication
and workflow processing has eluded the Industry for some
time.
Every day we all receive emails claiming to be urgent, immediate
response required etc. But when an Investigator is managing
several clinical trials how do they know what to do first?
REACT™ delivers interactive communication and workflow
processing using scheduled, action driven text messages
sent direct to the Investigator’s mobile phone. No
need to access a website, portal or even log in to the over
spilling inbox! As a bonus, CRA’s can be automatically
notified of messages delivered to investigators to facilitate
communication, issue tracking and follow-up. Responses can
then be tracked to ensure that all stakeholders have received
and reviewed the information.
Taking the example of Data Queries – a problem in
paper or electronic form.
Data Queries or Data Clarification Forms (DCF) can be sent
very rapidly to the Investigator but often this does not
result in a rapid response. Manually generated emails and
telephone calls to the Investigator take up a lot of time
and resource in a Data Management and Clinical departments
but do not deliver the intended results. REACT™ can
be used to send specific DCF reminders direct to the Investigators
mobile phone so as to direct them to the most urgent outstanding
queries.
REACT™ can be seamlessly linked to your EDC or CTMS
system. Setting up metric based rules ensures that DCF’s
older than a pre-defined date can be sent as reminders direct
to the relevant personnel.
DCF reminders are just one of the many applications of this
system. Let REACT™ improve your clinical workflow,
protocol analysis and review or any other process that involves
multiple interactions and approvals.
Studies
Create Studies and define clinical trial organization. Assigning
clinical trial stakeholders to mirror the organizational
structure of your clinical study, allows you to streamline
your communication flow.

Templates
Create reusable text templates and configure translations
in the stakeholders’ native language. Details about
the studies or patient/investigators etc that are saved
in REACT can be included for personalization.

Marketing Programs
Permission based marketing services can be sent
to consumers to help in a variety of different ways. Many
people have to juggle managing their illness with the pressures
of an increasingly busy life. Providing time specific reminders
regarding medication & prescription renewals helps the consumer
and increases retention and adherence.
Disease awareness or lifestyle management campaigns can
also be provided via SMS in the form of Doctor Conversation
Guides and Therapy/Condition assessments. Combine SMS with
your product website and ensure patients return when new
information has been published.

Hospital & Healthcare
reminder systems
One of the most challenging aspects of patient
management in a busy hospital department is maximizing patient
attendance. Each DNA or missed appointment costs the NHS
and results in longer waiting times for everybody else.
With up to 50% of patients failing to inform the hospital
or surgery in advance, there's little opportunity to ensure
the valuable time of health professionals is managed effectively.
Exco InTouch unravels the DNA challenge by providing SMS
reminders direct to the patients. Text messages represent
a cost-effective and non-intrusive method of reminding patients
to attend, and mean appointments can be rescheduled more
efficiently. The use of SMS technology delivers measurable
benefits for patients and could also dramatically reduce
waiting lists.
Test results can also be transmitted via SMS giving greater
patient access to the health service provided. Creating
a closer relationship with Patient groups, SMS plays an
important role in ensuring that those patients who require
further treatment are contacted as quickly as possible.
